Wonderful Relief Society Lesson

Today I was very privileged to attend a wonderful Relief Society lesson. Daniel is still serving as a second counselor in a Young Single Adults ward at BYU, and I am still teaching the marriage prep and temple prep classes. There are two relief societies in our Singles ward, and today they combined for one lesson about Visiting Teaching. The two relief society presidents set up a couple of lessons and activities that helped the sisters become more comfortable with sharing there religious feelings with each other, and I am excited to work harder in my visiting teaching in my married ward.

The whole lesson was very spiritual and beneficial, but the best part of the lesson came at the very end when the Bishop stood up to bear his testimony. He told us a story that I want to tell you.

Bishop McCarty has lived far away from his mother for 40 years. He has not been able to give her the care and attention that he always wanted to give to her because he was so far away. His mother is now 86. For about 20 of these 40 years Bishop McCarty had the blessing of Home Teaching a sister in his ward who was the same age, and in the same situation as his mother. Bishop McCarty worked his hardest to take care of this sister. He visited her often (more than the needed once a month) and served her endlessly. She passed away a year ago. All during the time that Bishop McCarty was serving and loving his woman, he prayed for Heavenly Father to send an Angel in the form of a Home Teacher or Visiting teacher to watch over his mother the way he watched over this sister. Then with tears in his eyes he asked each of us to be that angel. These sisters that we visit teach are some ones sister, daughter and friend. They are all far away from their families, and their families are praying that an Angel will watch over them. We can be that Angel who watches over and loves the sisters we visit. We can be an answer to a prayer.

By the end of this testimony all the sisters in the room were starting to tear up. It was a wonderful and powerful story. And I will work my hardest to be an answer to a prayer. In return I pray that someone will watch over my family like I will watch over the sisters I have the pleasure of visiting.
